Fight for Free Education for all!
The Young Communist League – Ligue de la jeunesse communiste extends solidarity to the students’ unions, workers, and democratic organisations across Ontario who are organising in defence of public post secondary education.
In the midst of an economic crisis the ruling class is doing everything it possibly can to make young people and the working class pay the price. Attacking universities is just one part of the business model for which young people must suffer the consequences of a crisis they are not responsible for.
There is no doubt that the provincial and federal governments deserve the blame: the federal government for the cessation of post-secondary education transfer payments in the 1990s, and the provincial governments which, little by little, have reduced funding to educational institutions and have forced them to run like businesses.
We endorse the initiative for a province wide walkout on November 5th as a preliminary step in rebuilding a province wide militant student movement. As young communists we work to build unity in action, inject ideas of class struggle, and try to navigate away from adventurist or reformist dead ends. We are committed to continuing our work to build an organised, united and militant pan-Canadian student movement; one that sees itself as part of the broader struggle against capitalism and imperialism, that targets big companies while building links with students across the world.
Only socialism will provide a real barrier-free democratic and emancipatory education for all that work for it. However, in the meantime, we need to fight tooth and nail to stop the dismantling of the gains won by the working class struggle, which would take higher education out of the hands of the public. Education is a right, but the only way for young people and students to have that right is to stand up and fight for it.
The YCL-LJC continues to call for:
- 100% Publicly-funded post secondary education!
- Grants, not loans!
- Free, democratic, accessible quality education for all!
- Cancel student debt!
- Stop the attacks on students’ unions and organizing on campuses!
- Defend Franco-Ontarian and Indigenous education!
