This February, the Young Communist League of Canada stands in solidarity with those in the street demanding an inquiry into missing and murdered Indigenous women (MMIW). Both the annual day of action on February 14th, and the grassroots campaign “#ShutDownCanada”, send a necessary message that urgent action needs to be taken to end the oppression of Indigenous people.

The Pride 2014 summer season is here, including World Pride in Toronto and hundreds of events in cities and towns right across Canada! This is a time to celebrate the gains by LGBTTQ+ communities, and to reflect on the challenges we still face. The past year has seen some remarkable victories, but also ominous signals of a dangerous pushback from anti equality forces.. More and more countries are recognizing same sex marriage and other fundamental LGBTTQ+ rights. In Canada, the struggle to end discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender expression/identity has seen new progress.

It’s Pride! Time to celebrate the advances of the LGBTQ communities in Canada and around the world. The Communist Party of Canada and the Young Communist League applaud these victories. More and more countries around the world are recognizing same-sex marriage and other fundamental LGBTQ rights. In Canada, the struggle for concrete steps to end harassment based on sexual orientation and gender expression/identity has seen a number of key victories. The number of GSA’s in schools, and districts with explicit LGBTQ policies continue to increase. Working with the queer community, Newfoundland and Manitoba have become the most recent provinces to ensure schools are safer and more welcoming places for all students. This year is the tenth anniversary of same-sex marriage in Canada.

We call for an immediate end to the dirty attack by the Harper Conservative government on Aboriginal people’s organizations, including the Sisters in Spirit campaign.
