Peace & Solidarity

Between Friday night and Saturday morning of last week, it was with great sadness that we learned the death of the main architect of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, at the particularly noble age of 90. This is particularly remarkable given the 638 listed assassination attempts which imperialism financed and attempted to set in motion.

To the Cuban people, in particular their youth organization, the Union of Young Communists (which is a sister organization of the YCL-LJC Canada), and to all organizations fighting for peace and against imperialism, to all progressive organizations in Canada, Quebec and around the world, we extend our deepest condolences at the loss of an unparalleled revolutionary that history has finally absolved.

A message of condolence, solidarity and friendship from the Young Communist League of Canada to the Unión de Jóvenes Comunistas de Cuba. The YCL-LJC and the UJC are sister organizations through membership in the World Federation of Democratic Youth.

Dear comrades,

On behalf of the Central Committee of the Young Communist League of Canada we wish to convey our deepest condolences on the death of the undefeated leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro. His heroic example, tied forever to the example set by the Cuban people, has been a source of strength for young Communists in Canada for the last sixty years.

The election of Donald Trump as President of the United States is a serious danger to working people in that country and around the world, including Canada. This election has resulted in a shift to the far-right in the White House, as well as both houses of government, and will likely be reflected in the judiciary. There is an immediate need to organize and unite against this dangerous new reality.

The rhetoric surrounding Canada’s military mission in the Middle East is polarized along party lines - yet regardless of whether it’s the Liberals or the Conservatives, there is a shared desire to escalate Canada’s imperialist aggression. Started under Harper’s Conservatives and continued by the Trudeau Liberals, Canada’s presence in the Middle East is increasing, and intensifying the conflict. The impact on the local population is devastating - causing refugees to flee conflict areas. The Trudeau Liberals find it appropriate to pat themselves on the back in accepting a meagre amount of refugees to mitigate the effects of the humanitarian disaster they had a direct hand in creating.

On one side, Conservative politicians are putting pressure on the Trudeau government to increase Canada’s involvement in the US led crusade against ISIS. They express embarrassment for the fact that Canada was not invited to the ‘adults table’ at the anti-ISIS meeting in Paris earlier this year. On the other, liberals commend Trudeau’s decision to take in 25,000 Syrian refugees and applaud his so-called humanitarian shift in Canada’s foreign policy in Iraq and Syria.
